People have been making soap for thousands of years. The earliest mention of soap dates back to Babylonian times around 2800 B.C.. It is very likely that it dates back even to prehistoric times but know known record exists.
It is unclear how long the technique of making lye soap, that we will how here, has been around. But, we do know the American colonist used this technique when they ran out of soap they had brought over from the old world.
The ingredients for this soap is small and it is easy. You will need lye, fat (any animal fat will do, lard is used in this demonstration), and water. Safety is critical when handling lye so be extra carful.
